Do You Lack the Willpower to Lose Weight?

Willpower to Lose WeightWhen people discuss dieting and exercising, the importance of “willpower” usually enters into the conversation. If you listen to some people talk, you might actually believe that willpower is the only thing that matters when losing weight. Unfortunately, a lot of people end up giving up on the idea of losing weight altogether, simply because they believe they lack the willpower to do it. If you’ve had problems sticking to your diet and exercise regime in the past, here are some tips you can use to increase your personal willpower.

Willpower versus Motivation

Sometimes a person may think that he or she lacks willpower when actually the problem lies with motivation. Without a clear reason as to why one wants to lose weight, it can often be difficult to stick with the process. It can be helpful to sit down and make up a list of all the various reasons why you want to lose weight. Include everything, such as improving your health, fitting into a smaller clothing size, or having more energy to play with your children. Once you have had a chance to review all the positive things that losing weight can do for you, chances are you might suddenly discover that you’ll have more willpower.
Willpower versus Temptation

In the face of temptation, it can often be difficult to muster the willpower to stay on your diet. For example, if you go out with your friends and they want to stop for ice cream sundaes, it can sometimes be almost impossible not to go along with the crowd. Afterwards, you might berate yourself for lacking the willpower to resist the temptation of the ice cream sundae. However, it’s important to remember that almost anyone will succumb to temptation if it’s strong enough.

The solution to this problem is to avoid tempting situations in the first place. If you know that your friends are planning to go out for ice cream, perhaps that’s one outing that you don’t need to participate in. It can also be helpful to plan in advance for these kinds of temptations. If you know your friends are planning to get ice cream but you’d like to go along anyway, do some research in advance to find the lowest calorie and healthiest item on the menu. That way, even if you do indulge in a treat, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that you made the best possible choice. By doing so, you’ll be doing your diet a favor as well as proving to yourself that you do indeed have the willpower to succeed.
