In fact, if there were no such thing as a temptation, dieting and losing weight would be a simple task. Unfortunately, there always seems to be just one more temptation lurking around the corner. It could be that box of cookies in the cupboard that seems to be calling your name, or the desire to go out with your friends to get ice cream. Whatever your particular temptations may be, it’s important to find ways of dealing with them if you want to successfully lose weight. Here are some tips and tricks you can use when faced with diet temptations.

Ask Yourself “What’s in it For Me?”

Sometimes you might find that you’re severely tempted by things that really don’t have any benefit for you personally. For example, although that piece of cake on the restaurant menu might look delicious, you might actually be too full to even enjoy it. Or, you might not even be truly interested in the television show you’re watching when you could be outside enjoying a healthy walk. When faced with a temptation, take some time to figure out what’s actually tempting about it. Ask yourself what benefits you’d receive by giving in to the temptation. Then, ask yourself what benefits you might reap if you resisted the temptation and did something healthier instead. You might be surprised to find that your temptations simply aren’t that tempting anymore.

Give Yourself a “Time Out”

If you find yourself about to give in to a temptation that would be bad for your diet and exercise plan, force yourself to wait ten minutes before taking action. If you’re like most people, you probably have a tendency to give in to temptations on the spur of the moment. If you give yourself a little bit of time to think about what you’re about to do, chances are you’ll be able to talk yourself out of it.

Reward Yourself for Making Good Decisions

If you have a tendency toward viewing a diet as a form of deprival, it’s no wonder that you’re constantly on the lookout for an appealing temptation. Instead of punishing and berating yourself every time you give in, why not reward yourself for sticking to your diet instead? If you know you’re going to give yourself a treat for being “good,” you’ll probably be far more likely to pass up the next thing that tempts you.
